FIRST RUN, Sydney is on this Sunday 4pm – 6pm at ReadyMade Works Studio in Ultimo –
Facilitated by Rhiannon Newton and Ivey Wawn – the sharing artists are the wonderful Ryuichi Fujimura and Lizzie Thomson;
Ryuichi Fujimura is an independent dance artist based in Sydney. Since the mid 1990’s, he has studied contemporary dance technique as well as improvisation and choreography in Sydney and overseas. For over a decade, Ryuichi has collaborated with both emerging and established international and Australian dance/theatre/visual artists in various dance, theatre, opera, site-specific performance and film projects.
Ryuichi will share the results of his proposition… “one hour every day in the month of July”
Lizzie Thomson is a choreographer and performer. Her practice interrogates processes of embodiment as they relate to cultural, historic and temporal forces. Her work draws on both choreographic and sculptural processes and takes multiple forms including performance, video installation, text and sculpture. Lizzie regularly collaborates with artists and thinkers including Erin Brannigan, Matthew Day, Agatha Gothe-Snape and Jane McKernan. Alongside her own choreographic work, she continues to work as a performer and has performed extensively in Australia and internationally in works by artists including Marina Abramović, Rosalind Crisp, Mette Edvardsen, Joan Jonas, Julie-Anne Long, Jochen Roller, Tino Sehgal, Hans Van den Broeck and many more. Lizzie is currently undertaking a PhD in dance at UNSW.
Lizzie will be sharing some new research looking at relations between textual scoring and dance. This research partly responds to an Ancient Greek belief that the process of thinking took place in the lungs, based on a logic that thought is connected to words, words to speech, and speech to the breath. Following this logic, words would therefore “pass from lungs to lungs” (R. B. Onians).
About First RUN, Sydney; FIRST RUN is an informal gathering around two artists sharing their work. This may include initial draft ideas, works in progress, the development of an ongoing practice or an investigation into a particular working method, (such as solo practice, improvisation, collaboration or dance on film). The work shown, 10 to 15 minutes, is then opened up for discussion with the audience.
FIRST RUN was initiated by Lucy Guerin Inc in 2008 in Melbourne, running regularly each year since at the company’s studio. FIRST RUN, Sydney is a partnership between Critical Path and ReadyMade Works in collaboration with Lucy Guerin Inc.
