From our Chair…
It’s a big end of the year for us all at ReadyMade, and we have lots of exciting news to share with you.
After six years leading our organisation, we farewell our founding director Sam Chester at the end of 2018.
An absolute star supporter of artist-run spaces in Sydney for nearly 14 years. Sam is exceptional—a champion for artists especially dance, with a head for turning a brilliant idea into reality, her hard-working approach and unbounded support for people has touched every corner of the independent dance sector here. It is with sadness that the Board farewells our fearless leader, but we are also super excited about what the next chapter brings for ReadyMade.
Sam has, as many of you know, been based in Perth for the last couple of years, where she has taken up a position as movement coordinator for acting and lecturer in performance at WAAPA. In the last year, former Chair Julie-Anne Long has stepped up to co-direct the company with Sam, and the Board thanks the co-directors along with 2018’s studio managers Chanel Cheung and Patricia Wood for their hard graft and dedication over the past year, maintaining the Ultimo studio as a welcoming and much-needed space for the independent dance sector. After an open search for a new director, we are over the moon to announce a new direction for the organisation…
The team of Sydney-based independent artists Rhiannon Newton, Patricia Wood, and Adelina Larsson have been appointed the new Caretakers of ReadyMade.
“Our vision involves continuing and strengthening the important role ReadyMade is already playing in Sydney. Through programs that nurture the sharing of ideas, knowledge and practice we hope to support the overall well-being of the sector and the vitality of dance practice taking place in Sydney. ReadyMade can be responsive to the needs of the community, and this, we feel, is vital to changing the way dance is valued and engaged with more broadly.” the Caretakers say.
Rhiannon, Patricia and Adelina bring diverse experience as curators, makers, teachers, and supporters of dance to their new role. In making the appointment, the Board reflected that ReadyMade is a special organisation that works outside of the usual models —a true artist space, run by artists, for artists. In this era in which the world doesn’t seem to be very caring, for our planet or for its societies, what each of us is left with is our own ability to show care for each other. ReadyMade cares about the work dancers do, and the Board is thrilled to have Rhiannon, Trish and Adelina lead our way forward.
